Goal of RESA

The goal of each of the sixteen RESA groups is to help local school systems, colleges and libraries meet their educational needs through sharing services across school system, college and library lines.  All RESA's are required by statute to provide services in seven (7) areas: (1) Research and planning; (2) Staff Development; (3) Curriculum and Instruction; (4) Assessment and Evaluation; (5) Technology; (6) Health; & (7) School Improvement.

Strategic Goals

  • To work in concert with the RESA Standards and Georgia Keys to Quality
  • To utilize RESA staff talent and expertise in service to schools and systems
  • To use current quantitative and qualitative data to design services with stakeholders based on system and school needs
  • To operate as a professional learning community to promote student achievement through collaboration, innovation, service and leadership

Governance of RESA

Complete control of RESA is vested in the Board of Control.  This board consists of one representative from each of the member schools, colleges and libraries.  The Board of Control has the same responsibilities for operations at RESA as a local board has for the operation of a local school system.  The areas of service and volume of service are determined by the Board of Control.  Annual needs assessments assist in determining the services provided within the RESA.

Funding of RESA

When the Quality Basic Education Act was passed in 1985, a provision for funding the RESA program was part of the act.  This funding mechanism has continued under the A+ Education Act of 2000.  In keeping with Georgia law, the State Board of Education provides funds for the RESA operation as part of the total education budget each year.  Local systems provide funds based on local FTE enrollment and other considerations.  In January 2002, a state-wide RESA coordinator was established by the State Board of Education to assist the sixteen RESA's in coordination of services within the RESA group and with other state agencies.  This relationship ended in March of 2003 and the RESA's entered a new relationship with the Georgia Department of Education in the new reorganization.
